The folds of the draperies are broadly treated,but betray a certain amount of effort, and the chord of colour struck bythe red robe, the blue mantle, and its pale green lining, does not vibratein perfect harmony. The colour, indeed, is the weak point in thispicture, but, on the other hand, the composition and action are al-together delightful! The Babe (a masterly essay in foreshortening)reveals his instinctive emotion in the agitated gesture of the littlearm he stretches out to his mother, while she, hanging over him,unclasps her exquisitely rendered hands, which seem to exclaimeven more eloquently than her face :
