There has been a settlement at Beziers since before Roman times, though today it is its Roman heritage that is most keenly celebrated - it is even claimed that the original amphora wine containers were invented by Beziers' winegrowers. In the 13th century, the fiercely independent people of Beziers refused to leave when the city was besieged by the Crusaders - the resulting massacre was one of the worst in the history of the Albigensian Crusade, the horrific violence now recorded as the 'Day of Butchery' on a plaque opposite the cathedral. Béziers Cathedral , is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Beziers, France. It was formerly the seat of the Bishopric of Beziers, which was suppressed by the Concordat of 1801 and merged into the Diocese of Montpellier.
