The countryside at the base of the Cleveland Hills, and as far as the eye could see in all directions when surveying the landscape, was shrouded in a deep fog bank which had been resident in North Yorkshire and Teesside for over 24 hours. Only the Cleveland Hills themselves and the summit of Whorl Hill, isolated in the centre of the picture, were high enough to bask in the late December sunshine, which itself did little to raise the piercingly cold temperature.
