It may be possible throughthe distended lower uterine segment to feel sutures and fontanelles. Inmultigraviclse it may be possible to pass the finger within the uterusand to outline the presenting part and diagnosticate the position. The process of labor is naturally divided into three portions or stages—the opening and dilating of the uterus and the genital canal; sec-ond, the expulsion of the foetus; and, third, the expulsion of its pla-centa and membranes and the contracting of the empty uterus. In treating of the position and presentation of the foetus we shallmake but two positions for each presentation. At the beginning ofnormal labor the head has entered the brim of the pelvis, its vertex tothe left of the median line and in front of a line drawn transversely Fig. The foetus during the second stage of normal labor. The back of thechild is directed toward the mothers left side, the bisacromial diameterof its trunk being about to engage in the left oblique diameter of thepelvic brim. Such are the position and presentation of the foetus whenactive labor begins in normal cases. The gradual fitting of the foetus 182 PREGNANCY AND LABOR. into the pelvis goes on for days and weeks before its active expulsionbegins. It might be reasonable to include this process under the termof labor, but use restricts the term to the actual expulsion of the subjective signs of labor result from uterine contractions. Thepain is often ill-defined in the lower portion of the abdomen, and maybe at first ascribed to indigestion. As the greater part of births occurduring the night, the patient very commonly blames some indigest
