There has been a rapid decline in theranching industry of the Prairie Provincesduring the past ten years, owing to theoccupancv by farmers of the lands for-merly utilized by ranchers as pastures. There is reason to believe that therewill be a slight revival in the industry inthe near future, but each rancher will prob-ably operate on a somewhat smaller scalethan formerly. FAT CATTLE AT THE ALBERTA EXPERIMENTAL FARM. 3°I THE PRAIRIE PROVINCES OF CANADA the Dominion Government appointed in1912 a Commission, which was instructedto inquire into conditions surrounding theranching industry and to designate thoseareas in Southern Alberta and South-Western Saskatchewan in which, with ourpresent knowledge of agricultural science,there is little likelihood that successfulcrop growing can be carried on. Although the Commission has not yetcompleted its investigations, there isreason to believe that its labours will re-sult in the setting aside of numerous areasfor grazing purposes, and that these willbe leased to stockmen for a term of years. The breeds of cattle most favoured bythe ranchers are Shorthorns, Herefords,and crosses of these two breeds. Thereare a few herds in which
