The Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City, officially named Catedral Metropolitana de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María a los cielos, is the largest and oldest cathedral in Latin America. Situated on the north side of the Plaza de la Constitución (Zócalo) in the heart of Mexico City's historic center, this imposing structure stands as a monumental symbol of Spanish colonialism and the Catholic faith in Mexico. Construction of the cathedral began in 1573 and continued for nearly 250 years, resulting in a unique blend of architectural styles. The cathedral's facade showcases elements of Baroque, Neoclassical, and Churrigueresque styles, reflecting the changing tastes and influences over its long construction period. The twin bell towers, added in the 18th century, rise to a height of 64 meters (210 feet), dominating the cityscape. The cathedral was built on the site of the Aztec sacred precinct, directly atop the ruins of the Templo Mayor, using many of the stones from the destroyed Aztec temple. This physical and symbolic supplanting of indigenous religious structures with Christian ones was a common practice during the Spanish conquest and colonization. Inside, the cathedral boasts 14 chapels, five naves, and a magnificent golden Altar of the Kings. The choir features ornately carved wooden stalls, and the cathedral houses two of the largest 18th-century organs in the Americas. The sacristy is renowned for its lavishly decorated walls, paintings, and furniture. Over the centuries, the cathedral has faced numerous challenges, including damage from fires and earthquakes. Perhaps its most persistent issue has been the gradual sinking of its foundations, a problem that affects many buildings in Mexico City due to the city's location on a drained lakebed.
