Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), operated by NASA, taking off from the main runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California, USA. This is Global Hawk 872, on a flight to check instruments for the 2014 ATTREX (Airborne Tropical Tropopause Experiment) Pacific Stratospheric Mission. Yellow-and-black pods housing the Hawkeye cloud particle probe instruments for this mission are mounted underneath the wings. This aircraft has a wingspan of 35 metres. Developed between 2001 and 2005 by Northrop Grumman for US military surveillance, Global Hawks have been used by NASA since 2009. Photographed on 20 December 2013.
