JAMES SHEARER was born at Albany,New York, July 12, 1823, son of George andMargaret (Buchanan) Shearer. The Shearers werefrom Campsie, Scotland, where the family had livedfor five hundred years. After having received acommon school education he removed to Detroit,Michigan, in 1837. He now apprenticed himselffor six years to a master builder and spent his leisure. JAMES SHEARER In 1860 he was elected Alderman and secured manyneeded city improvements. On the breaking out ofthe Civil ^\ar he became greatly interested in thepreservation of the Union and gave valuable assist-ance to soldiers in the field and to their families athome. He made several trips to the S juth to mini-ster to wounded soldiers on the field and to tlie sickin hospitals. In 1S65 he removed to Bay City andbecame an important factor in its prosperity. Hecame to the aid of the First National Bank, lifted itfrom the financial ruin into which it had fallen, andin 1867 was elected its president. He was one ofthe commissioners to select designs and to supervise 198 uNirERsnr of Michigan the building of the State Capitol at Lansing. Hewas a Regent of the University of Michigan from1S80 to 18SS. During this period he was chairmanof the Committee on Buildings and (jrounds anddirected the erection of the Library building.
