An old engraving of Highgate Cemetery, Swains Lane, Highgate, London, England, UK c. 1850. The cemetery opened in 1839, as part of a plan to provide seven large, modern cemeteries, now known as the 'Magnificent Seven', on the outskirts of London – in this engraving London itself is in the far distance. Inner-city cemeteries had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and were seen as a hazard to health. The initial design was by architect and entrepreneur Stephen Geary. Wealthy Victorians were often interned in Gothic tombs and buildings (as here on the left).
An old engraving of Highgate Cemetery, Swains Lane, Highgate, London, England, UK c. 1850. There are approximately 170,000 people buried in around 53,000 graves across the West Cemetery and the East Cemetery at Highgate Cemetery. The cemetery in its original form opened in 1839, as part of a plan to provide seven large, modern cemeteries, now known as the 'Magnificent Seven', on the outskirts of London – in this engraving London itself is in the far distance. Inner-city cemeteries had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and were seen as a hazard to health. The initial design was by architect and entrepreneur Stephen Geary. Wealthy Victorians were often interned in Gothic tombs and buildings (as here on the left). Today much of the grounds is woodland and is a haven for wildlife. Karl Marx is buried within the cemetery grounds.
