This lengthy piece against Babel cannot be placed earlier inpoint of time than in the series which we are now considering,although it is most closely connected, according to Vol. III.,p. 87 sq., with the book of Yeremya as it is at presentarranged. In fact, it contains many utterances, turns ofthought, and ideas which are the same as Yeremyas, and,indeed, its entire plan is such as he adopts ; and inasmuch asYeremya is in the habit of repeating himself on occasions, thisfact might at first sight create a prepossession in favour of hisauthorship. However, Yeremya repeats himself upon a largerscale than is here the case, and in his repetitions does notbecome untrue to himself. But in this piece Yeremyas pecu-liarities are perceptible only in certain passages, although theyare numerous, and the repeated passages are often completelyrecast and altered.* As far, therefore, as the
