Aster in lilac (Asteraceae) boke background

Aster is a flowering plant from the genus Asteraceae, originating from North America and Eurasia. The name aster means star, referring to the flower head. There are roughly 180 species within the genus. They are popular as garden plants because of their colourful and attractive flowers. Aster species are used as food plants by the larvae of a number of butterflies (Lepidoptera) species. Asters can grow in all hardiness zones; also known as Michaelmas daisies because of their typical blooming period, August to September. N ancient times it was thought that the perfume from their burning leaves could drive away evil spirits but today they are known as a talisman of love and a symbol of patience.
