I have been practicing on the Mississippi quickstep for Sometime past, and it is not the most agreeable business in the world I have received no letters from home for Sometime. and wrote but few. I fear that Newton has been killed in the Vicksburgh[Vicksburg] fight. the 4th Regt Iowa Infantry went into the fight with 760. men, and came out with 120. but I have been unable to learn the names of those killed and wounded. we dont get any Iowa papers here and it is hard to find a list in any others. we have got no word from Vicksburgh[Vicksburg] for Several days. I see that the Copperheard Democrats are still trying to get up a Rebellion in the free States, and I have no doubt but they will ultimately Succeed If they do, us Republicans will have to fight for our lives, for the democrats would butcher us today if they had a chance. I got a letter from Mumpower Sometime ago. driving[?] me for what Henery[?] Lewis and I owed him. but I cannot pay a cent, on anything that Lewis and I owed for the reason that Lewsis debts cannot be collected. Since he was killed in the Army and I am not fool enough to pay Lewes debts out of my own pocket. and then loose it myself. Fisher would have paid Mumpower, but I forbid him doing it. I have claims against lewis, and I don ?t propose to loose my own dues, and other peoples too. You ask if you Shall tell Miss Polly to write to me? No! if She wants to write let her write; But She Shall not use a Sister of mine for catspaw; Not if I can prevent it. But if any of my favorites for instance; Miss Ellen, or, Miss Lizzie asks my address give it to them with my best wishes along with it. I am not writing to any girls now, I am living on the thoughts of what devilment I have already done. I
