The medieval fortified three mile city walls around the city of York in York, Yorkshire, Britain. The city walls, partially surround the historical part of the city, are a distinctive feature offering good views of the city and the skyline of the famous York Minster. Along the walls, there are a number of gatehouses allowing excess into the city centre. The walls date back to Roman Britain when York was an important military post. Later, the city became the capital of northern England by the invading Danish Vikings who settled here and made York their capital calling it, Jorvik.
