Dogfish skin. Light micrograph of the skin of a lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula). The surface is covered in sharp placoid scales, which are also known as dermal teeth or denticles. The scales have a very similar structure to teeth, with a central pulp cavity that contains the nerves and blood vessels that is surrounded by a layer of bone-like dentine, which is covered by a layer of enamel. Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
