Monea Castle, County Fermanagh
Monea Castle is a splendid example of plantation castles built by settlers. Designed to impress, to provide a fairly comfortable home ... and to keep the (usually restless) natives at bay. While Monea did not really succeed in the last area, this certainly must have been one of the most impressive castles at its time. It still manages to impress today, as a splendid ruin of massive proportions. So, if you are interested in castles, it will be well worth your time to head for Monea, even if it is not directly on the main tourist routes.
