This Pacific species is ap- parently most closely related to G. lineatu^ (Cuvier and Valenciennes) of the Atlantic, from which it differs in having fewer predorsal scales (39 to 46 for lineatus, 26 to 30 for spilonotofterus) and in hav- ing stronger, always present, palatine teeth; lineatus has more scale rows (58±) and fewer dorsal rays.^^ There are slight differences in the coloration of the pectoral fin (that of lineatus has a broader white posterior margin

As for the other recognized Atlantic species having a dark dorsal spot, spilono- topterus differs from G. cyanopterus Cuvier and Valenciennes in hav- ing fewer predorsal scales (35 to 40), and from G. exsiliens Linnaeus in having the distal margin of pectoral fin white instead of black as in exsiliens. In both species there is an overlap or agreement in the number of scale rows, number of dorsal and anal rays, and number of predorsal Figure —Holotype of Cypselurus antoncichi, new species ( No. 140291), from Eniwetok Atoll.
