Mute Swans (Cygnus olor). Six none-breeding birds on quayside, preening. Second bird from left, reaching over back for preen gland on top of the tail. Oil exuded under stimulation is then spread on plumage using bill, and head used as a mop to spread oil over plumage. This acts as a conditioner to the veins of the feathers, maintaining their flexibility, re-alignment and water proofing capabilities. All five of the others are doing this vital activity.
