THE OLD COLONY TOWN Coming up from Buzzards Bay throughthe woods, I get my first view of the spiresof Plymouth from the top of a hill. Thetown lies on a sloping plain between the seaand a range of pine-covered hills, which, be-ginning behind it, extend about thirty milesin a southeasterly direction and end on theAtlantic Ocean, It is easy to discover that the thing whichthe town lacks is a steady harbor; one thatwill stay at home all day and not go awayat night. Whenever the tide runs out, theharbor runs out also, leaving in its placebroad, oozy flats which offer good pickingsto plover, whose flying cry is a startling noteamong the sounds of a summer the ooze wind narrow channels ofshallow water to the sea. By the deepest ofthese the distance is about eight miles fromthe Gurnet Lights, at the entrance of the 4 THE OLD COLONY TOWN harbor, to Plymouth Rock. If the Rockcould attract the sea as it attracts sight-seers, the Old Colony Town would have arespectable harbor, and
