In the days of Sir John MALULA. 359 Mandeville, who visited Malula at the end of the fourteenthcentury, it seems to have been a nest of hermits, who havelong since died out; but from time immemorial it has beenesteemed a place of great sanctity, and the monasteries tothis day are much resorted to on certain religious festivalsby pilgrims from all parts of Syria, and have in consequencebecome immensely wealthy.
