The Old Man of the Mountain's haunt
It was here, in XI and XII Centuries CE, that an Ishmaelite rebel, Hasan Sabbah (or Hasan-i-Sabbah in Arabic) set up a quasi-independent state later known as the "assassins" as he terrorised Persia and beyond, ordering his followers to seek out and infiltrate his enemies and ultimately assassinate them. It was said, perhaps spuriously, that the faithful were doped on hashish from which the word "assassin" is said to have derived.
