interior Ice well, Moorish Ice house: la nevera de Baix, near ruins of L'Atzuvieta, Vall d'Alcala, Marina Alta, Alicante Spain


The Niviera de Baix is located at 635m altitude, excavated in the rock, is has a circular shape of diameter and a hemispheric turn of masonry built with a calcium mortar. The thickness of the wall is .95m and it has a capacity of about 700 cubic metres, It dates from the 18th century, the peak of the snow commerce. The Ice is kept and preserved. During the Autumn the surroundings of this construction were cleaned, and the first snow of the season gathered and packed with satchels and filled through the window of the building. inside, the workers treaded it with their feet and with picks, distributed it in layers, alternating with straw. Once full, the openings were closed in order to keep it cold,.The ice was transported by night and commercialised in the local market, and above all, supplied to the harbours such as Denia.
