Space debris. Artwork of a ring of space debris circling the Earth. As well as over 900 satellites in Earth orbit, there are large amounts of space debris in orbit, including tools and equipment lost by astronauts. Because of the high speeds of objects in Earth orbit, even a collision with a small object can have catastrophic consequences. However, the sheer volume of space means that the risks remain low.
