'Polyphemus' (1930) of the Nederlandsche Steamvaart Maatschappij 'Ocean', after the ship on its way from Sydney to England (via the Panama Canal), under Captain C. Koningstein, was torpedoed at 468 miles from New York by the German submarine 'U 578'. This killed 15 people on board.
