Bone reconstruction X-ray. Image 2 of 2. Post- operative X-ray of a severely damaged arm reconstructed with a bioceramic implant and metal pins. The implant (mottled segment, upper centre) is replacing a missing section of the upper arm bone, or humerus. It is made of a porous ceramic, hydroxyapatite, and is infiltrated with cultured human cells. These bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) are the precursors of bone cells. They are capable of producing fully functional bone when the implant is placed at a site of bone damage. The metal pins align the broken bones so that they heal correctly. For an X-ray image of the injury prior to treatment, see M330/879.
