Archaeological dig. Archaeologists excavate a medieval graveyard at Withorn Priory, the cradle of Christianity in Scotland. The archaeologists are using brushes and trowels to carefully remove earth. Any finds are left in place until their position has been drawn on a map with the aid of a grid (as at upper left). Withorn Priory was founded by Saint Ninian in Galloway over 1500 years ago, making it the first Christian settlement in modern-day Scotland. It later became one of Scotland's earliest towns and attracted pilgrims for over 1000 years. More than 1600 medieval skeletons from the 13th to 15th centuries have been uncovered here.
