A solitary demonstrator in front of the German Reichstag. His sign reading: politicians, please allow us life before we die. Berlin 2004, Germany. HGW DE044078 RIGHTS PROTECTION AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. The Reichstag building, the seat of the Bundestag or German Parliament, was originally built in 1884-1894 to plans by Paul Wallot, but was destroyed in the Reichstag fire of February 1933. The modern renovation by Sir Norman Foster took place in 1994-1999. It is the new cupola on the roof of the Reichstag that attracts so many visitors. The 800 ton steel and glass accessible structure has a forty meter high viewing platform that can be reached by traversing two spiral ramps.
