A Sherman tank stands beside the Avenue du Général Leclerc in Bourg-la-Reine. On 25th August 1944 Free French forces passed this way to liberate Paris.

In 1990 an M4 Sherman tank was donated to the Parisian suburb of Bourg-la-Reine to be displayed, as a war memorial, at this junction on the Avenue du Général Leclerc at the entrance to the town. It was along this road, on 25th August 1944, that the Free French forces led by Général Leclerc advanced towards Paris to liberate the City. However, the actual M4A3 Sherman tank of Général Leclerc’s Division, which was named “Bourg la Reine”, is to be found elsewhere. It was badly damage by enemy anti tank artillery and put out of action on 22nd November 1944, close to the German border, where it remains to this day. That original vehicle has since been recovered and restored and is now given a place of honour at Phalsbourg in Lorraine, close to the spot where its days of military service came to an abrupt and violent end all those years ago.
