It isa large handsome species, entirely a bird of the ocean,of wandering rather than migratory habits, and occursprincipally in the outlying Scottish Islands, where it isprotected on account of the valuable down plucked fromits own body for covering the eggs: these are of a lightgreen colour and are four or five in ^^r^^^^ Eider Ducks. The male weighs between 6 and 8 pounds, and the femalea few ounces less. The top of his head is jet black, whichis also the colour of the lower half of the breast, thebelly, under tail-coverts and rump; the shoulders areslate-colour and so is the nape of the neck; the wingsand tail are grevish-brown, and the remainder white. 48 BRITISH BIRDS including the long scapularies, but excepting the neckand breast, which are ruddy buff. The legs and feetare dusky green. The female is much duller in all hercolouring, as well as somewhat smaller than the male. The Gadwall. This Duck has bred in the Gardens of the ZoologicalSociety; it is closely connected with the famous Canvas-backed Duck of America, and is a handsome bird, verysusceptible of domestication.
