While it does not follow that the long udder may produce more milk, or even as much, as the pendant form, evidence secured by the author years ago " demonstrated that length of this gland is only se- cured through the development of the forequarter of the udder. The nat- ural tendency is for the hindquar- ter to extend well up behind, and the higher the better. The forequarter is often short, show- ing little extension. Frequently the ud- der is what might be termed funnel-.
