Cambyses at Pelusium
In 525 , Cambyses, king of Persia, took control of Egypt. One of the decisive battles was at Pelusium. Tradition said that Cambyses, aware that the Egyptians considered the cat sacred, had his troops carry cats with them so that the Egyptians would not fire at them for fear of striking a cat. Cambyses was also said to have hurled some cats into the city. Cambyses did take the city. In this illustration, dating to around 1900, Cambyses is shown with a cage of cats in front of him on his horse.
