The mild winters, cool summers,good water, nutritious grasses and sheltered valleys andcanons have attracted the cattle raiser and the sheep is one of the leading sheep raising sections in New Mexico;it is estimated that there are within its limits, 400,000 or moresheep and thousands of cattle and horses. Lately, someattention has been paid to the raising of goats, and the successis such that the number of these animals will be very muchon the increase during the next few years. There areextensive timber lands which of late have attracted theattention of lumbermen and capitalists. The so-called Mitchelltract in the northwestern part covers 300,000 acres, on whichit is estimated there are 2,000,000,000 feet of good white pinelumber. The American Lumber Company, a syndicatecapitalized at |8,000,000, is cutting this timber. A loggingroad has been built from Thoreau on the Santa Fe Pacific tothe tract. Belen is situated forty miles south of Albuquerque, in almost theexact geographical center of Valencia county, on the westbank of the Rio Grande. It has an altitude of 4,200 feet. Itspopulation is 1,200. The stretch of country in the center ofwhich the town is located cannot be excelled for fertility andproductiveness. Belen stands above all other communities in New Me
