Housing the University of OxfordÕs vast collections of art and antiquities, the Ashmolean Museum was established in 1683 and is the oldest museum in the United Kingdom. Here we see an intricate stone carving of the God Vishnu, one of the principal Hindu deities from West Bengal. This fine figurine is from Sagar Island in West Bengal, and was probably created about 1050, in the Pala period.
