Striped areas show highlands mostly covered with montane forest. Some include other formations generally at altitudes above 3,000 m (Ruwenzori, Virunga Volcanoes, Itombwe Highlands). Another feature must be emphasized. On the slopes of the higher mountains which were first explored (Ruwenzori and Kivu volcanoes), the flora is rather distinctly stratified: regular montane forest with Podocarpus, Bamboos, Hagenias and alpine meadows. Else- where, in larger areas between 2,000 m and 3,000 m, the first three facies are more or less interwoven and mixed. Another consequence of the larger surface of the pertinent regions outside the Ruwenzori range and the Kivu vol- cano is that larger swamps can generally.
