Before entering upon the story of this invasion, how-ever, we must refer to a project of Sir William Howesthat had a marked effect upon the patriots. All throughthe winter of 1776-77 the hardy patriots had been gather-ing stores at Danbury, Connecticut, and word of this hav-ing been received at New York it was decided to send aforce to seize these valuables and so inflict a blow uponthe stubborn farmers that might aid in bringing themto their senses.
