Brick entrances (now closed) to 'Stufe' grottoes at Solfatara volcano. Pozzuoli near Naples Italy; Campi Flegrei volcanic area. One grotto was named Purgatory and reached 60º centigrade while the other, 'Hell' reached 90º centigrade. They were natural sudatoria – or sweating rooms – where people would spend a few minutes crouching, to avoid the worst of the heat, whilst breathing sulphurous fumes, steam, and sweating heavily. Alum and sulphur crystals have built up on the ceiling and walls. (81)
