Skin graft. Image 2 of 3. Skin graft on a 56- year-old woman's leg, 16 days after grafting. Healing is not yet complete. Skin grafts are used when a wound is too large to be stitched shut or will scar severely if left to heal naturally. This patient wounded her leg in a fall. A layer of skin was taken from elsewhere on her body and placed over the wound. It is growing to meet the surrounding tissue, protecting the wound from infection. The colour and texture of grafted skin may not exactly match its surroundings, even when healing is fully completed. For this wound 7 days and 6 weeks post-graft, see images M336/052 and M336/050 respectively.
