Its claim to be regarded as a Japanese bird rests upon examples from Nemoro in north-east Yczzo (Blakiston and Pryer, Trans. As. Soc. Japan, 1882, p. 88). I have an example collected by Dr. Schrenck in Kamtschatka, and there are four examples in the Pryer collection obtained by Mr. Snow on the Kurile Islands in July. It also breeds on many of the islands in Bering Sea, and on both shores of the North Pacific Ocean, where its range extends a little further north than Bering Straits, and as far south as the Farallon Islands, outside the harbour of San Francisco. An egg collected by ^Ir.
