The huge fortress covers 17 hectares and is the largest and best preserved fortress of its type in Poland. There was a fortified castle on the site since the 10 th century. However the current fortress was commenced by the Austrians in 1662, taking its design mainly from the Dutch school of medieval fortification, and was completed 200 years later by the Prussians. The walls are never less than 4 m thick, and in the lower sections are as much as 11 m thick.
