The three vows of the monks were chastity, includ-ing abstinence from marriage; j)overty, or the renunciation ofpersonal possessions; and obedience to superiors. From theBenedictine monasteries the surrounding peoples learned agri-culture and the useful arts. The clergy repaired to them foreducation.
