Premature baby receiving phototherapy to treat jaundice. Jaundice is a yellow discolouration of the skin and eyes caused by the deposition of excess bilirubin (bile pigment) in skin tissues. It is a common condition in babies and is usually caused by an immature liver not excreting bilirubin efficiently. Phototherapy uses blue light which causes a reaction that breaks down the bilirubin into a harmless form that is then excreted in the urine. The baby's eyes are covered to protect them from the light.
