For very early use sow in January or February in hot-beds; prick out when the plants are strong enough into other hot-beds; or sow in cold frames in March, transplant when danger from killing frosts is passed to the open ground, in rows 2 feet apart and 18 inches in the row. For a succession sow in the open ground the last of March or early in April. To secure plants for win- tering in cold frames sow the seed in well-prepared, rich ground, from the 10th to the 25th of September. When the plants are large enough prick them out of the seed-bed into the frames. It is important that the plants should be set down to the first leaf, so that the stem is all under ground. Protect during severe weather with a covering of glass, and give plenty of air and light during mild days. The plants are usually set out from the middle of March to the middle of April, in rows about 2 'eet apart and 18 inches in the row-. The autumn and winter varieties sow in April or early in May, in shallow drills, 3 or 4 inches apart; transplant early in July, in rows 24 feet apart, and 2 feet in the row. Cabbage succeeds best in a fresh, rich soil, well manured, and deeply dug or plowed. The late plants are subject to attacks of the cabbage-fly, which destroys them as fast as they appear above ground. To preserve the plants sprinkle them with wood-ashes, air-slacked lime, plaster, slug-shot or tobacco du>t early in the morning while the plants are wet with dew. EXTRA EARLY VARIETIES.
