Electro-diagnosis and electro-therapeutics : a guide for practitioners and students . f the flexor hallucis longus muscle, onthe outside next to the tendo Achillis at its lowest part, flexes the terminal phalanx of the great toe. Stimulation of the flexor digitorum communis longusmuscle, on the inside close to the lower tibial point, nextto the tendo Achillis, flexes the toes. The planta pedis muscles can be isolated in but fewcases and only with very strong currents. Since theyvery seldom have a practical interest, they need not bementioned. Method ofInvestigation The method for an electrical investigation, accordingto what we have said above, is the following: Let us take as the simplest example a diseased singlemuscle of one half of the body—, the left extensordigitorum communis brachii muscle. The investigationbegins on the healthy side of the body with the searchfor the healthy muscle—that is, in our example, theright extensor digitorum communis. We place an indif-ferent plate electrode, well soaked with warm water, on n. tibialis m. gastrocnem, n. tibialis. n. peroneus m. soleus m. flexor digitor. coram, long.\ m. flexor/ halluc. long. Fig. 24:. THE METHOD OF INVESTIGATION 89 the sternum, or in the neighborhood of the sacrum, orat the neck, in which case an especially adapted neckelectrode (Fig. 25) may be used. This electrode is eitherheld by the patient against the sternum with the handwhich is not being examined, or it is fastened in the col-lar or in the clothing surrounding the hip, so that it liesdirectly on the skin. (Be careful that part of the cloth-ing is not pushed in between.) From time to time wemust see, in the course of lengthy investigations, that theelectrode is sufficiently moistened.
