St Sixtus II and his Deacon St Laurence, mid 15th century. St Sixtus II (d258) was elected Pope in 257 and martyred in 258 under Valerian's persecution. St Laurence (d258), saint and martyr, was Deacon of the Christian church in Rome. Under the persecution of Valerian he was condemned to death by being broiled.
