Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070, 30 Doradus), composite image. This emission nebula is 160,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Dorado. This composite image combines data in X-ray (from the ACIS instrument of the Chandra X-ray Observatory) and infrared (from the IRAC instrument of the Spitzer Space Telescope). Within the nebula are around 2400 massive stars producing intense radiation and powerful stellar winds. Multi-million-degree gas (producing X-rays, blue) carves out gigantic bubbles in the surrounding cooler gas and dust (producing infrared, orange). Image published in 2011.
