Wray, Lancaster, Friday 26th April, 2013. Kevin Dickson 54, and Phillip Wring, climbing ladders & finishing the tableaux "Fifty Shades of Wray" at the Scarecrow Festival, established 1995 with wacky scarecrows constructed by the villagers to raise funds for charities, including the church and local school. The theme for 2013 is “I read – Books” a ‘cultural’ highlight of the Lune Valley's calendar. Thousands of visitors come to the village to admire the skill and humour of the local residents and it really is a great display of community spirit.
This year’s Wray Scarecrow Festival has the themes of ‘read me’ and ‘myths and fairy tales’ with an interesting mix of scarecrows to discover around the village. Thousands of visitors come from far and wide to the small north Lancashire village to see the handiwork of the residents whose creativity, sense of humour and ingenuity produce a broad range of scarecrows with something to suit (and amuse) almost everyone. The associated Wray Fair is now an integral part of the ever-popular Wray Scarecrow Festival, one of the ‘cultural’ highlights of the Lune Valley’s calendar. Visitors (but not crows!) flock from far and wide to wander round the picturesque Lancashire village of Wray and enjoy the scarecrows which take over each spring. This started on Saturday 27 April and runs through to Wray Fair on Monday 6th May.
