On a bright but cool and crisp winter morning the Bennerley viaduct, known as the Iron Giant stretches out across the valley of the River Erewash

Cw 7887 The Iron giant from striding across the valley On a bright but cool and crisp winter morning the Iron Giant stretches out across the valley of the River Erewash on the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border. The Iron Giant is the affectionate name for the Bennerley Viaduct that was opened to the public as a walking and cycling route on the 13th of January 2022. The viaduct is one of only 2 surviving wrought iron viaducts in the UK being opened by the Great Northern Railway in 1877 carrying trains until the line was closed in 1968. Over the last two years or so with funding from the Railway Heritage Trust, Historic England, the lottery Heritage fund and World Monuments fund £ million has been spent to make the viaduct safe and accessible for walkers and cyclists. The westerly access ramp leads directly off the towpath of the Erewash Canal and will make a good leg stretch for towpath walkers and boaters alike, being 1410ft or 430m long.
