Foetus. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a healthy human foetus approaching full term. The foetus is facing towards the mother's back (left of each image). The nine scans show a sequence from upper left to lower right from the right side of the foetus' body through to its left side. The umbilical cord, which links the foetus with the placenta on the uterus wall, is seen. In addition the foetus' brain, spinal column, heart, liver and lungs are visible. MRI scanning uses powerful magnetic fields and pulses of radio waves to produce images of soft body tissues.
