Accommodation wagon at the roadside, an overnight halt for Roma travellers en-route to the Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria. The Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers which takes place on the first week in June, and has taken place since the reign of James II, who granted a Royal charter in 1685 allowing a horse fair "near to the River Eden".
The World Famous annual Appleby Fair has been held since 1750. It is held for one week every year from the first Thursday in June until the second Wednesday, the largest Fair of its kind in Europe. It attended by Romany and Irish families travelling to meet up with old friends, celebrate their music, history and folklore and conduct business - particularly buying and selling horses.
