16th century coal mining. Illustration from the book De re metallica (On the Subject of Metals) by Georgius Agricola, published in 1556. This shows the technology of coal mining available in the age. Agricola (born Georg Bauer, 1494-1555) was a leading author of works on geology and mineralogy. De re metallica was his last book, and was a complete survey of the technology of mining, smelting and chemistry in Germany.
