Putnam to take charge of the fortifyingof Bunker Hill, where earthworks were thrown upby troops under his charge the night before thememorable battle, which resulted in making tl:eBritish troops evacuate Boston. For his services hereceived a pension until his death. He was a far-mer and cooper by occupation, a man of fine phys-ique, and a leading and highly honored citizen. Hewas a deacon in the Congregational Church. OnMay 15, 1777. he married Abigail Meacham, bornin Scotland, Conn., who died July 24, 1840, aged. ^c^(:^^h^^<^ COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD 341 eighty-seven years, and she was laid to rest by theside of her husband in the South cemetery, atHampton. Children as follows were born to thisunion: (i) Abigail, born May, 22, 1778, marriedAdonijah Burnham, a farmer of Hampton, and theyhad several children. (2) Arthur Lee, born March27, 1780, died unmarried about the year 1868. (3)Lois, born July 9, 1782. married Amos Justin,a .stage driver of Eastford, Conn., and had a num-erous family of children. She died at the age offour-score years. (4) Abijah, born May 16, 1785,was a sailor, and died at sea in 1808. (5) Sey-mour is mentioned below. (6) Clarissa, born Nov. 6, 1789, died when over seventy years of age. Shemarried Luther Bradford, of Canterbury, Conn.,and had several children.
